Sunderland AKA , the Black Cats welcomes defending champions , Liverpool in a mouth watering Premiership clash , at the Stadium of Light in Sunderland , as both sides hope to return to winning ways tonight after a lack lustre performance in previous games where both failed to secure the maximum three points , the Black Cats failed like pack of cards at the Emirates to temporary league leaders , Arsenal 3-0 while the Reds also failed to win at home against Manchester City last Sunday , losing 1-2 .
In their reverse fixture , Black Cats played a 1-1 draw at Anfield two months ago when an own goal by Nordi Mukeule secured a point for Liverpool . It could have been an embarrassing defeat for the Reds if not for the late minute own goal by the Black Cats
Liverpool were on the verge of securing three valuable points in last sunday’s clash, but Dominik Szoboszlai s faultless free kick was cancelled out by Bernardo Silva s tap in goal. Before Eiling Haaland converted a 93 minutes spot kick to give the visitors the three points at stake ,2-1 in a dramactiic fashion .
With their complacent style of play , the Reds are now well known to be dropping points on the 90th minute in every match this season and have done that for the fourth time this season in the top flight , already the joint most in the English Premiership League this season , with 13 games left to play after Watford in 2017/18 , Westham in 2021/22 and Southampton in 2024/25 season .
A loss tonight against the Black Cats will represent the eighth time this season , same with last season when they lifted the trophy , they have an uphill task at away against the tactically well equioed Sunderland who may pose a big problem for them this night at the Stadium of light of they do not live up to their pre- match billing , as they are already sixth spot behind Man United and Chelsea four and five spoints after yestedays Chelsea draw 2-2 against Leeds United at the Bridge .they also need to secure a place in next year’s champions league with a good result from stadium of light .
Liverpool cannot afford to drop many more points tonight , considering their recent poor run of form when they have won only one game out of seven in the EPL (D4 L2/.
Their only consolation will come from their good outing against newly promoted teams where they have won (14 D5 ) in 19 topflight games in all competitions .
Also Liverpool s road trip away from home have seen them winning just 2 out of 10 games , (D3 , L5 ). and have conceded 21 goals in 12 matches this season , more relegation bound as well as basement club , Wolves , 20. Meanwhile all their , three defeats against Sunderland have come away from home , though they are unbeaten in their last five games at the Stadium of light , with (D3 , W2).
The Black Cats have also struggled for consistency lately , as they have won three drew four and lost three in their last 10 matches reshuffling between defeat and victory in each of their last five games .
What a poor result for them ???
After crushing Burnley 3-0 they went ahead to lose bitterly to league leaders by same margin at the Emirates , a result that saw them slipping to the nineth position and with 3 points behind today’s opponents ,Liverpool in sixth .
The Black Cats also stands out with their five star performance at home this season as they have not lost at home with 12 games unbeaten run in this campaign ,longest this season by a newly promoted team and the longest being Nothingham Forest unbeaten ,21 game run in the 1977/78 season , which they finally won that year in the then First Division matches in the United Kingdom before the advent of the English Premiership League in 1993/93 season.. What a record by both newly promoted teams in different years .
Their team Coach , Regis Brit will be happy hoke in this Wednesday s clash when tey have been wonderful collecting 73.2 % maximum points and losing none to any of the top four or top six teams in the Epl . What a massive record in their history in the EPL .
They have also won their last three matches against Liverpool and losing only two as well as Chelsea s last two games in May 2016 , and Leicester City , December 2018 with only six teams having won thee matches in a row and most recently Chelsea between 2016 and 2020.
On the downside , Sunderland have not won their last 11 games with Liverpool (D5, L6).
Since a 1-0 win in March 2012, they have also scored just 19 goals in top flight matches against the Reds. ,representing a paltry percentage of (0.6 ) per game .
Predictions .
Liverpool hopes to win today at all cost if they can put their acts together and avoid pitfalls ,but a determined Black Cats will not cave in easily as they have not lost at home this season .their 12 matches unbeaten is a bit scary to any unserious team with flat footed defenders who may not have a good chance of stoping a well determined attacking prowess of Sunderland .
A lot is also at stake for the Reds as of they fail to win again this night will further bring them down the wrung of the table .
We expect the Black Cats to have a share of the spoil in fired up capacity crowd at the Stadium of light .
