Having secured their spot in the last 16 in their second group games against the Carthage Lions of Tunisia in Group C , the Super Eagles of Nigeria faces the Cranes of Uganda in a mere formality match at the Fez Stadium in Morocco this evening , a town well known as a center of learning as well as where the first university in the world was founded . Definetly , the Super Eagles of Nigeria may use this match to educate the Cranes of Uganda more on football matters as the city , represents a center of learning and football is not left out of this learning process .
The Super Eagles sits three points clear on top of Group C while the Cranes are on the bottom of the table though with an inferior goal diffence to third placed Taifa Stars of Tanzania .
As they say , death , taxes and Nigeria made a mince meat of a routine win against the Carthage Lions of Tunisia as Nigeria battled for more than 10 minutes to see out a 3-2 win over the Carthage Lions of Tunisia after leading 3-0 for the better part of the match.
Nigeria dominated the better part of the match as Eric Chelle men took the lead through Victor Osimenhn header , Wilfred Ndidi made it two for the evening while Bergamo based Atlanta striker , Ademola Lukmon made it three in what looked like a fairly tedious evening for the Tunisians , whose flat footed defenders could not understand what really went wrong with their defensive prowess and their bemused attackers spent almost 74+ minutes shooting paper darts on a Nigerian shield in a defence being marshalled by Seyi Ajayi and Calvin Bassey, but a 74th minute header from Monastir Talbi and a controversial penalty from Ali Al Abdi gave a life line to the Carthaginians who came close to a dramatic come back at stoppage time .
Nigeria s recent group games in Group C underlines the Super Eagles excellence and vulnerability at both ends of the pitch ,after scoring and conceding cheaply in seven of their last games plus a 2-1 victory against Tanzania in their opening games of the tournament .
The Super Eagles have now won seven games in their last 10 matches as well as extending their stronghold on the Afcon group games with seven wins out of nine games on offer .
Nigeria may likely extend their supremacy after having secured a place in the last 16 .
After securing their spot in the last 16 of the tournament Nigeria would like to extend their winning streak with another win against the bemused and badly positioned Cranes of Uganda
They won last in 2013 edition in South Africa and success here would help ease the pair of losses in the final s of the previous campaigns of the Afcon tournament . while also offering compensation for not qualifying in the 2026 Mundial in the Americas .
The Cranes of Uganda s failure in securing a berth in 2026 World Cup is viewed with less scrutiny after coming second in their group and it is seen as a more respectable achievement in the global show piece qualifying games .
After ending their qualifications with a loss to Algeria , the Cranes of Uganda have lost two of their following four matches including a 3-1 reverse against Tunisia .in their Afcon opener .
After a long lay off from the Afcon campaigns since 2019 , ywhen they appeared last ,Uganda got their first point in match Day 2 against Taifa Stars of Tanzania in a 1-1 draw , when it could have been a straight win , had it been Allan Okello converted his spotage time penalty kick during the hostilities .
This leaves Paul Put s men with just one win out of 10 in the Afcon games they now face an early group games exit for the fifth time in eight Afcon tournament s .appearance making a win inevitable and vital on Tuesday .
A head to head count against Nigeria favours the Cranes of Uganda as they have won four out of eight matches , that gives them a relief and they will like to add that tally here , knowing fully well that a third place finish in the group automatically qualifes rhem for the next round of 16, if the second position is out of their reach
Without any fresh injuries after their last match against Tanzania ,Head Coach Paul Put still have his squad intact to pick his players , though he may re- shuffle his team .
The 69 year old sweat merchant , made five changes in his match Day games including the goal keeper where Janel Salim was dropped in Favour of Denis Onyango who could return his place today .
Ugadan born Nigerian , Uche Ikpeazu is also likely to get a starting shirt after his impressive performance against Tanzania when he scored the equaliser for the Cranes .
Changes were made in the Super Eagles line up in their match Day one campaign when Bruno Onyemechi replaced Zaidu Sannusi at the left back, while Frank Onyeka was a better choice ahead of Premieehip new boy , Samuel Chukwueze in the mid field pack or engine room though both could retain their spots .
Both Osimehn opened scoring in this tournament against the Carthage boys , Tunisia , while Captain , Ndidi scored his first goal for the Super Eagles then Bergamo based Atlanta midfielder , Ademola Lukmon completed the riot act against the bemused and tactless Carthaginians who were shell shocked in their second group games against Nigeria with the third goal , making his second consecutive goal in this year’s Afcon .
Chelle may hand over some playing time to the Super Eagles reserve team , players like Chidera Ejuke, Simon Moses , Paul Onuachu and other squad members will take a leave from the Super Eagles dugout at least today s game.
Predictions .
With Nigeria’ s contrasting form both in the attack and defence ,still very evident , there may be goals from both ends of the pitch in this mere formality match for the Eagles though there may be a team rotation , the Eagles are expected to edge a hard fought match against the Cranes of Uganda
